Why is there oil in my water container for the cooling system on my vauxhall astra 1.7dti w reg?

is the coolant creamy white and thicker than water? if so headgasket is gone. go to ur local garage n get it checked. All astras have a creamy solution on the oil filler cap from condensation not cos haedgasket is gone this maybe on the coolant filler cap or radiator cap but not true on oil filler. Probability is that your Oil /Water systems are compromised.


If there is enough Oil detectable in your Coolant system the chances are you will find evidence of a white frothy scum on the underside of your Oil Filler Cap.





This is symptomatic of Head gasket failure (a thin membrane of material that sealsand separates the above Systems at the business end of the engine - allowing the two to mix which is detrimental to both -- rapidly.





You may experience notable drop-offs in acceleration/sluggishness going up hills.


Presumably a 'high miler' your W reg will rapidly become uneconomic to fix - however much you love it..... Sorry!

I had this problem on a Cavalier fitted with the same engine as yours, it turned out to be the intercooler (at the base of the oil filter) letting engine oil into the cooling system.


It might be worth your while checking this out first without dismantling the engine to see if the head gasket has failed, as it may involve less expense.

It may not be oil. A number of coolant additives are either a green or brown colour, and can look like oil at first glance. I suggest you remove the filler cap when cold %26amp; have a sniff to see if there is oil present. As suggested by others, the age of your car must be taken into account as to how much money you are willing to spend on any repairs. A quick fix is the addition of ';radweld'; or similar to the cooling system. Used it many times over the years to good effect

its not the gasket that is expensive its the fitting. if you can get it fitted cheap then it may be worth checking flebay for one. might not be for yours not sure but...

A cylinder leakage test would be more beneficial than a compression test in positively identifying the problem.

The quick fix additive is in fact Holts Wondarweld, Radweld will not fix your problem Wondarweld may. I've had long term success on three occasions.

Is the car automatic? Does it have an oil cooler? If the answer to both these questions is no, then unfortunately the most likely reason for your problem is that your head gasket has failed.


My advice would be to have a garage do a compression test and sniffer test.

it could be the head gasket(most likely) or if your car is an automatic, it could be that the transmission cooling line that runs through your radiator could have ruptured leaking fluid in to the cooling system
Most likely to be a head gasket failure, also check the oil filler cap as this will most likely have a white emulsion on it as the oil and water mix.
If your lucky the head gasket has gone, if your unlucky you have a cracked engine block
Head gasket gone,get compression test to make sure.
DITO....Head gasket. Never a cheap fix.
