Can you please help... i bought a 2001 1.7 tdi astra last week and as its my first car i havent got much of a clue about them lol i bought it and took it home and found oil in where the engine coolant goes so i took it bk and got my money bk for it as i was advised that it maybe the head gasket and it wuld be to much bother to fix... but the dealer rang me up yesrerday saying he knows wot it is and its nt the head gasket but the oil cooler and he said it was a commom fault in this model... can you tell me if this is true or not?????Oil cooler in a vauxhall astra?
Never should their be oil in the Coolant. This ain't worth the hassle, you did the right thing. Plenty more of them out their to buy.Oil cooler in a vauxhall astra?
yes it is a common fault but it is also a common fault for them too over heat if left too long which doesnt just blow the head gasket but also warps and cracks the cylinder head so since you dont know the history of it it might be best too find another
Wouldn't say it's common but i've done a couple. Still wouldn't trust the dealer. Oil in the coolant isn't a hard thing to spot. When you're in the trade it's one of the few quick checks you can do at auction.

They either checked the car over and missed it in which case what else have they missed. Or (more likely being a dealer) they spotted it but thought we'll not mention it and only fix it if the customer spots it and complains.
yes probably is intercooler commen fault if head gasket it would be using water and steam out of exhaust plus water in engine oil on dipstick a creamy coulor they can put sniffer in water tank where you full up with coolant to see if head gasket away but iwould return and get money back and go somwhere else
A faulty oil cooler is common on the 1.7 tdi isuzu engine replace quite a lot of them for the same issue of oil in the expansion tank.

You will find when the oil cooler has failed there is no loss in engine power as associated with a failed head gasket.

The 2.0 di ecotec engines also suffer the same problem.
