85 and up T-bird turbos have both oil and water cooling...Dose a water cooled turbo have to have oil lines or just water supply?
Depends on the turbo a bit. 85-6 Tbirds had Garret turbos. 87-8 had Ishi-Warner turbos.

The older Garretts came without water cooling. The water cooling was added later in production to make the bearings last longer. Oiling is an absolute necessity, water is optional. I have heard from turbo rebuilders that the water cooling on those particular turbos isn't designed very well anyway and isn't as effective as it ought to be. If it were me and the water lines were available, I'd plumb them in. In the 1980's many Volvos had ';oil only'; Garrett turbos almost identical to those in Tbirds. Turbos that had to be replaced under Volvo warranty were water cooled and came with a mandatory plumbing kit so water lines could be added. The Volvo people seemd to think the water cooling was worth having.

The Ishi turbos are a bit more delicate. If yours has water lines, I'd certainly hook them up.
You have to have the oil lines connected or the turbo bearing(s) will melt themselves to the housing.
