How to I go from being high line auto technician to a oil refinery career?

I am thinking about change careers from being a high line automotive technician to working at an oil refinery. I live in Orange County in California. I know there are many companies to work for, but how do I get the companies to bring me in? How to I go from being high line auto technician to a oil refinery career?
Generally you need to get a degree as a petroleum or chemical engineer.

The lower level maintenance jobs are generally controlled by a union and it may be difficult to get in. Check with the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers union for membership requirements. And check with the refineries themselves for job postings and the requirements.

And be prepared to move to the south bay area as all the refineries are there, and you really do not want to have to commute from the OC on the 405.
