Hey Guys, Im not sure if need an oil cooler for automatic transmission..In a 3.2ltr Turbo Diesel powered van..I will be towing a trailer that is a total weight of 750kg and the load will never be anymore than 300kg..Is it true that the gearbox can suffer severe damage if overheated too much?
any ideas on what i should do would be great..
ThanksDo i need a oil cooler for automatic transmission for trailer towing?
for sure..yes ....heat is the biggest killerDo i need a oil cooler for automatic transmission for trailer towing?
Yes the #1 cause of auto trans failure is overheating.
You have a stock trans cooler built into your rad., but for towing, hard driving, racing, etc it's not enough to keep the trans cool enough.
An add on cooler kit is only $35-50. Money well spent in my opinion. Kit comes with everything to install cooler with.
On my camaro that I race, I run 2 extra trans coolers. I also have a trans temp gauge. With the rad cooler my transmission was running at 215* f (200*f is the max you ever want the trans to go to)
Added one cooler and fuild temp dropped down to 198* f, still alittle too warm, so I added another and temp then ran 180* f.
yes like anything overheating the trans will rune it.You should have a Trans cooler anyways Look to see if you have a smaller radiator in front of the radiator .If not have 1 installed you don't want to wreak the trans. Also if your puling alot i suggest a power controller you can switch the program form hauling to economy by pressing a button.
