ok the honest truth you check the oil when the motor in not in operation. (meaning not turned on) the reason for this is that most auto makers have it where the oil pump senser send a certian amount through out the whole motor lubericating the inside to allow it to function without burning out valves gears and other important parts.
the best time to check your oil is in the morning when you 1st wake up due to the oil draining back into the oil pan to give a true reading.
the only time you check a fluid while the motor is runing is your transmission fluid. the reason for this is transmission fluid cirulates through the transmission seperating the gears from colliding with eachother.
Your car has to be shut off. It doesn't matter if you drove the car, because a lot of people would drive to the station and have them check it. So turn off the car and let the oil settle for a short period of time then check it. Same thing with the transmission , check when the car is shut off.
Either way, but you get a more accurate reading after all the oil drains down into the crankcase after the car has been parked awhile. Also, the car needs to be parked on level ground to get the best reading.

When the car has been running the oil is thinner and could be lower then it really is. Check it on flat land and while it is cool.

When checking the oil , check the oil when engine is off.. cool or warm.
Check the transmission when trans. oil is hot with engine running in park.
You check the oil when the car is running, and the transmission fluid when the car is cool.
The car should not be running when checked, but can be checked, when off, hot or cold, and on level ground.
You warm up the oil then wait 10 min and then it drains out easily. Don't attempt to do it sooner than 10 min because oil is still making it's way down from the motor.
Either but make sure you car is on level ground and if you do it warm be carefully not to burn yourself.
It doesn't really matter. Check it both ways. See if you notice a difference.

WD40 - does a good job of cleaning. But eventually it will dry and the fan will squeak again. I had this problem just last month.

Very easy just get the adaptor that mounts on the oil filter stud and connect the lines
oil cooler is not necessary unless you are towing all the time but it's not hard to add a cooler

My local aircooled guru says straight 30 in the winter, and straight 40 in the summer.

you know they run staight 50 wt in some air cooled bikes, if it's high mileage,that might be what you want
Being a Beetle fanatic, and having 8 of them in the past, plus other VW models, I was told by VW mechanics that a heavier oils was always preferred, as air cooled engines run hot in comparison to the water pumpers. So...I always used 15-40 in the winter and 20-50 in the warmer/hotter months. Just my take...
Years ago when I worked in a vw shop we used straight 30w in all vw vehicles.
That was in California, where the only two seasons you have all year is night and day. But really a vw motor wants to perform. And I found it was always best to run a higher weight oil. In my stock 1600 I always put 40w in it. On larger motors I built, like 1835, or 2180, I would use nothing other than Castrol 50w. And given the age of your motor now I would not consider any thing lower than 40w. And change it often,and dont forget to clean the screen at every change.

Yes, it's been 30 years or so since they put this info out, and there maybe better oils today, but it worked just fine for millions of people back then and for my 2 cents it works just fine today. So, here is the chart from one of the official service manuals (1978 printing).
